Hanak first completed an apprenticeship as a wood sculptor in Vienna and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1898 to 1904. After his training, he worked as a self-employed sculptor and led the class for monumental sculpture at the School of Applied Arts from 1913 to 1932, and from 1932 he was professor of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts. Hanak was a member of the Secession, the Wiener Werkstätte and a founding member of the Austrian Werkbund, as well as close friends with Gustav Klimt and Josef Hoffmann. As early as 1902, he took part in an exhibition organized by the Hagenbund. Hanak created sculptural jewelry for several buildings by Josef Hoffmann as well as for residential buildings in the municipality of Vienna in the 1920s. Numerous portrait busts and monuments are his work, such as the war memorial in the central cemetery, the overall design and the bust of Viktor Adler at the Monument to the Republic. His students included, among others: Fritz Wotruba, Rudolf Reinhart, Heinz Leinfeller and Franz Hagenauer.
