Born in Vienna in 1908, grew up in Vienna, studied psychology. In 1925 Schmid enrolled at the Art Academy; stays in Berlin and attends the Reimann School, exhibitions at the Secession and the School of Arts and Crafts. In 1938 Schmid fled to Paris via Belgium; his family was deported to Ausschwitz. From 1940 to 42 Schmid was interned in Gurs with his friend Jean Améry. From 1945 Schmid lived in Paris and exhibited regularly in various Paris galleries. In 1958 he met Gail Singer; in 1978 his best friend Jean Améry committed suicide, whose work "Lefeu or the Demolition" is a biography of Erich Schmid. In 1981 his last exhibition takes place; Schmid dies in Paris in 1984. Kunsthandel Widder is in charge of Erich Schmid's work and in 2002 published a monograph with contributions by Matthias Böckl, Walter Koschatzky and Claudia Widder as well as texts by Jean Améry. The book comprises 127 pages (56 color illustrations) and is available from Kunsthandel Widder.
