Steinbüchler attended from 1921 to 1923 the painting school with Matthias May in Linz and studied from 1926 to 1933 frescoes at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Franz Klemmer, Ludwig von Herterich, Angelo Jank and Max Doerner. After returning to Linz, he worked as a freelance artist and was known primarily as a fresco painter. He created the Kriegergedächtnis fresco at the city tower in Vöcklabruck as well as the two frescoes destroyed today for the courtyard of the hospital of the Barmherzige Brüder in Linz and for the Linz station building. In 1961 he moved to Eferding and then hardly appeared artistically. He was a member of the Innviertler artists 'guild, the Vienna Secession, the Munich Secession, the Vienna Künstlerhaus and the artists' association "Maerz".
