Marie-Louise von Motesiczky was born in Vienna in 1906, to an aristocratic family. At the early age of 13, she decided to become a painter. After initial painting lessons, she went on to study at the art school of Czech artist Carola Machotka in The Hague. She continued to attend classes at the Frankfurter Städelschule, the Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule, and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. At the age of 21, she returned to the Frankfurter Städelschule as a master student of Max Beckmann. Beckmann, her lifelong friend and mentor, had a great artistic influence on her. In 1938, after the Nazi invasion of Austria, The artist and her mother fled, vie the Netherlands, to England, where she settled down in Hampstead. During that period, she became a close friend of Oskar Kokoschka's, and Motesiczky became the girlfriend and lover of the poet Alias Canetti. After several shows across Europe, in 1966, the Wiener Secession dedicated the first solo exhibition to her in the country she had grown up in. In 2009, a street in the Viennese Disctrict of Floridsdorf, "Motesizckyweg", was named in her honour.
